When should I get my hormone levels tested?

Q: I have been hearing alot about Bioidentical Hormone Therapy. Is it best to get tested before you go into menopause? At what age do I need to be concerned about all of this? I am 42 and would like to be prepared for what lies ahead.

A: Perimenopausal symptoms can begin up to ten years before menopause. If you are feeling great at this point in your life, then you might want to get some labs so that you will have a baseline of when you felt great. If you have begun to experience symptoms, like difficulty sleeping through the night, getting very hot at night, moodiness, low energy, loss of libido or many of the other symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, then it is time to get checked and get your hormones in balance. This can definitely help to ease your transition into menopause.

I hope this helps!
